5 Quick Tips to Manage Your Child’s Viral Cold At Home

Taking care of a sick child is one of parents’ greatest concerns. They want to make sure they are doing everything correctly and tending to their children appropriately. Here are my 5 tips to manage your child’s cold comfortably at home.

First, give Tylenol/acetaminophen or Ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil as needed for fever or pain. This helps keep your child comfortable, which will also make you more comfortable. If you do not already have one, purchase a medication syringe from the pharmacy for accurate dosing.

Second, to help with nasal congestion, saline (salt water) is your friend. For babies, you can place 2-3 drops of nasal saline into each nostril and then use a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator like a Nose Frida to help remove mucus. For children, you can use a saline nasal spray and spray 2 sprays into each nostril every 3-4 hours as needed for congestion.

Third, humidified air can work wonders. Cool mist is preferred, but any temperature of humidified air is better than dry air. If you do not have a humidifier, run the shower and have your child sit in the steamy bathroom for 20 minutes.

Fourth, if your child knows how to gargle, saltwater gargles can help soothe a sore throat. Mix ¼- ½ teaspoon of salt into 8oz of warm water.

Lastly, stay hydrated! Lots of fluids – tea with lemon, soup, water, juice, etc.
